Two annual events that get
runners and riders ready for the summer season.
Subaru Elephant Rock Cycling Festival
Celebrating its 21st year, ERock is an annual pilgrimage to
Castle Rock for thousands of cyclists. Where can you find an 8-mile family
course, 32-, 50-, 65- and 100-mile road rides, a 25-mile off-road course and a
24-hour ride during one weekend? This year’s event kicks off on May 30 at 6:30
p.m. with the GoFast 24 Hours of ERock mountain biking race followed by the
rest of the rides on Sunday, June 1.
“We’re happy to say that we’re not only ‘of legal age,’ but
we’re also celebrating a new season of road riding after Governor Ritter signed
the Share the Road license plate bill into law June 3 at last year’s event,”
says Scot Harris, event organizer.
When the bill was signed into law, it created a Share the
Road license plate (3,000 were initially approved for circulation) that
generated funds to promote bicycle safety on Colorado's roads. In addition,
this law enabled cycling events like the Subaru Elephant Rock Cycling Festival
to continue with a large census of riders—and maintain the 7,000-rider
count.
This year’s events are filling up fast, so visit
www.elephantrockride.com to register. May 14 is the mail-in deadline and May 28
is the regular deadline.

Dick’s Sporting Goods Bolder Boulder
One of the biggest 10K runs in the U.S., the Bolder Boulder
celebrates its 30th anniversary this Memorial Day weekend in Boulder. The race,
which has grown from 2,700 in its inaugural year to more than 50,000 last year,
is a celebration for runners of all ages and levels.
New this year are more waves to accommodate more runners, a
new course for pros and a new title sponsor. But expect the usual amenities: a
great bag lunch, free massages post-race from the Boulder College of Massage
Therapy, a fun-filled expo area and a grand Memorial Day celebration at Folsom
Field. This year’s race is set for Monday, May 26. To register or for more
info, visit

One of best parts of the Bolder Boulder is the music and entertainers lining the course. Who organizes them all? We caught up with Ron Bostwick, official course entertainment director.
How did you get involved?
I met race founder Cliff Bosley when I was promotions director at KBCO. After I left the station, Cliff asked me to be the entertainment director. This is my second year.
What are your responsibilities?
I’m responsible for finding entertainment to set up along the course as well as producing a CD of the bands called Bolder Boulder Bootlegs. This year will be Volume 5. It’s cool because the first song on the first CD is by a little-known band called The Fray.
How do you find the entertainment?
I talk to friends and other people in the music biz. I look at line-ups of bands playing at local festivals and I just listen to different music of those bands. When I hear music that is a right fit, I contact the band. Sometimes they come to me. The music needs to fit a family atmosphere. I’m also looking for a sound people don’t mind hearing at 7 a.m.
What can runners expect this year?
I’m looking to set up 30-plus entertainment locations (last year we had 33) averaging about five per mile. I’m trying to match what I did last year: country, a DJ, surf rock, African marimba, a funky horn band, the Boulder High squad, belly dancers, Elvis and more.
10,000 free Bolder Boulder Bootleg CDs will be up for grabs. Pick one up at Bolder Boulder tent at the pre-race expo on the Pearl Street Mall or visit the race website for other locations.
Join lululemon athletica for a free Yoga for Runners class after the big race. The class, to be taught by Jo Schaalman of CorePower and the Yoga Pod, will focus on stretching tight muscles and preventing injuries after the race. Not only for the physical body, yoga can also improve a runner's ability to achieve goals and exceed past performance levels. The class will be held at lululemon’s Boulder store at the 29th Street Mall and will be followed by an outdoor picnic ($5) to refuel after a long day of hard work. Visit www.lululemon.com for details.
