Summit for Someone Celebrity Climbs
Backpacker Magazine’s Summit for Someone, the benefit climb program supporting Big City Mountaineers, announces several celebrity climb options for 2008.
July 25-28 climbers can sign up to climb with author and photographer John Roskelley. John is considered one of the world’s top Himalayan climbers and adventurers. He has spent 42 years climbing throughout the world, successfully reaching the summit of four 8,000-meter peaks, including the two highest, Everest and K2. John’s forte is climbing extreme rock and ice routes at high altitude and “set the bar” worldwide with first ascents of the East Face of Uli Biaho in Pakistan in 1979 and the winter ascent of the Northeast Face of Tawoche in Nepal in 1989, neither of which have been repeated. John will be climbing Granite Mountain in Montana for Summit for Someone.
Our next celebrity is Rainier Mountaineering Inc., co-owner, mountain guide and world adventurer, Peter Whittaker. Peter also has been the host of “Trailside: Make Your Own Adventure,” an Emmy-nominated outdoor adventure series on national public television. Born into a mountaineering family, Peter has traveled around the world and has 200+ ascents of Rainier alone (his first ascent when he was 12 years old). Peter will be climbing Rainier once again, this time as a Summit for Someone climber on August 20-22. Climbers who accompany him on this climb are guaranteed to come away with a true knowledge of this famous mountain.
All celebrity climbs include a meet & greet the night before the climb and roping up during the climb with these outdoor celebrities. For climbers looking for an opportunity to climb for a worthwhile cause and spend time with some of the outdoor industry’s legends, Summit for Someone 2008 is a can’t miss program.
