The Colorado Running Hall of Fame selection committee announces its 2008 inductees. The induction ceremony will be held the evening of May 14 in Denver and is free and open to the public.
Colorado has one of the highest concentrations in the world of American and world record holders and Olympic and world championship medal winners. The board of directors at Colfax Marathon Partnership, Inc. established the Colorado Running Hall of Fame in 2007 to recognize Colorado residents who have achieved national and international recognition on the long-distance running stage.
The 2008 inductees are:
Arturio Barrios Former world record holder in the 10,000 meter run, 1989
Competed in 10,000 meter run at the 1988 Olympics
Steve Bosley Founded the Bolder Boulder in 1979. Its now the fourth-largest footrace in the country with more than 50,000 runners.
Holds a record of outstanding community service
Melody Fairchild As a student at Boulder High School, she was an eight-time state champion
NCAA track champion at the University of Oregon
Bronze medalist at the World Cross County Championships
World Championships Track and Field Team in the 5,000 meter run
Ellen Hart Pena Competed in the 1980 U.S. Olympic Trials 10,000 meter run and the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials marathon
Won the Bolder Boulder twice
Steve Jones Former world record holder in the marathon, 1984
Winner of the London Marathon and Chicago Marathon, 1985
Winner of the New York Marathon 1988
Mark Plaatjes Marathon champion at the 1993 World Championships in Athletics
The first American to win a gold medal in a long-distance event at World Championships
Tony Sandoval Won the 1980 Olympic trials in the marathon and would have been a gold medal favorite of the U.S. had not boycotted the 1980 Moscow games.
