As the first event of its kind in Colorado, Venus de Miles, a women-only bike ride, is a celebration of women, community and of our youth becoming leaders. The idea grew out of the desire to empower women through one of Colorado's most popular sports, cycling, and to support an important cause, Greenhouse Scholars, that gives back to the youth in our community.
The event
website is now open for registration at http://www.venusdemiles.com. The event will benefit the
not for-profit organization Greenhouse Scholars that provides mentorship and
scholarship support to high-performing, under-resourced college students.
Venus
de Miles will take place on Sunday, August 17, 2008, and has two rides to
choose from, 35- and 65-miles, both of which start at Prospect Park/Prospect
New Town in Longmont. Both courses wind through Longmont, Hygiene and
Niwot, with the longer course continuing on to Lyons and Jamestown. Event
coordinators are expecting more than 500 women to participate in its inaugural
year.
“At
Greenhouse Scholars, we value community as one of the most powerful ways to
change the world. There¹s excitement and buzz around Venus de Miles:
it’s an event that will bring us together to really make a difference. The
Scholars in our program have overcome tremendous obstacles in their own lives
and, as a result, will go on to become strong leaders with a passion for giving
back. These Scholars and I are tremendously grateful for everyone organizing
and participating in Venus de Miles,” says Andra Pool, COO of Greenhouse
Scholars.
All
proceeds from the ride will go to Greenhouse Scholars—a nonprofit organization
headquartered in Boulder. The organization supports high-performing,
under-resourced college-bound students in Colorado with personal, academic, and
professional support as well as a significant financial scholarship. This
unique Whole Person© approach to providing scholarships is designed to help
ensure that students succeed in college and become community leaders making a
difference. Currently there are 24 students in the program. Venus de Miles is
expected to raise at least $17,000 for Greenhouse Scholars.
