Two Colorado companies were named to “Outside” magazine’s inaugural list of “Best Places to Work.” Caution: Envy may be a side effect of reading this article.
SmartWool Corporation, a Steamboat Springs-based company, and Kelty, a Boulder-based company, are two of 30 companies honored by the magazine. The full list and related stories are published in the magazine’s May issue, which hit newsstands April 15.
SmartWool makes merino wool-based apparel, socks and accessories. The company was recognized for its employee-driven program that provides employees 40 hours of paid volunteer time at a non-profit of their choice. Other benefits recognized include a $10,000 adoption assistance program, a $3,000 hybrid car purchase program, and an annual all-company ski day held at Steamboat Ski Resort.
Kelty manufactures parenting, camping and outdoor gear. The company was recognized for its environmentally friendly office, which has super-efficient lighting systems, carpeting made of recycled materials and 100 percent wind-powered electricity. Locker room and shower facilities encourage bicycle commuting, and employees get paid time off for volunteering, as well.
“These 30 companies figured out that there is a way to have it all and understand the growing need for work/quality of life balance,” says Chris Keyes, the magazine’s editor.
The magazine conducted surveys based on benefits, compensation, job satisfaction, environmental initiatives and community outreach programs. The winners were broken down into three categories: small (15 to 49 employees), medium (50 to 249 employees) and large (250 and more). SmartWool and Kelty both ranked in the top 10 for medium and small companies, respectively.
The list was compiled with the help of the Outdoor Industry Association, a trade association for companies in the outdoor recreation business, and Best Companies Group, a group that works to recognize superior employers.
