The State Games of America, held every biennium, is a national multi-sport event for amateur athletes of all ages and abilities.
In the wake of a record-breaking 2007 games, the city of Colorado Springs, Colo. has entered a bid to host the 2011 event. The site selection committee will be visiting the city April 21 to 23.
Medal winners from 49 separate State Games held at the state level earn the right to compete against other state-level winners in the national arena at the State Games of America.
If Colorado Springs wins the 2011 bid, it will be the fourth time it has done so. The city held the games in 2005, 2007 and will hold them again in 2009. In 2007, a record 10,803 athletes from 47 states came to Colorado Springs to compete on the national level.
The State Games of America have previously been held in St. Louis, Mo. in 1999 and 2001, and Hartford, Conn. in 2003.
The U.S. Air Force Academy would serve as the primary venue in Colorado Springs, with competition also taking place at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, Fort Carson, Colorado Springs World Arena and Colorado College.
